Pet World was originally started in the 1970s, first named PetStep. In the early 1980s the name changed to Pet World IV. These Pet World stores were owned by the Stice Family. In 1988 the ownership changed to Tim and Sherry Emerson. Pet World has won numerous awards. They are the only pet store to win “Best of Lawrence” every year since the contest’s inception in 1994.
Pet World is not just a store or adoption center. It is part nature center, part exotic shelter, part pet store, and part petting zoo. Their standards are so high for rehoming and pet care that the state of Kansas uses Pet World as a training site for new Animal Health Inspectors.
