Merchants is owned and operated by local chef TK & Emily Peterson. They have a passion for supporting their local community. They work with their neighbors to bring the best food locally available to the table for a great meal. They call their restaurant a “New American, Farm-to-Table,” gastropub.
The building started out to be a national bank in the 1880’s. In 1932 when the building was still a bank Clyde Barrow from the infamous Bonnie & Clyde got his start by robbing this bank in Lawrence, KS. He was on his way to start his rampage on the north US banks when he was forced to stop by The Eldridge Hotel. With this stop he was able to watch the bank’s daily schedule as it is right across the street. One day they decided to test their luck and these rookies turned into official bank robbers making off with $30,000. $30,000 in 1932 is worth $665,971.53 today.
Today this building no longer serves as a bank. Today Merchants Pub & Plate is in this space. You can still head into the vault though. On your way to the restroom look as you are walking through the door.
Their menu is always changing with the seasons and what is local and available.
They have a bar with 30 craft beers on tap.
A must get is the Mac and Cheesemonger. You must add the bacon though. It is FREE!
